Known today as one of the most practical, effective and powerful martial arts in the world, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) relies on strategy, leverage and timing, rather than strength, speed or flexibility.
Developed by the Gracie over the last ninety years, Brazilian Jiu-Jistu was first made famous in The Ultimate Fighting Championships (UFC), one of the first events to allow multiple martial arts to test themselves against each other. Barely throwing a punch, Royce Gracie fought and won three times in one night,becoming the first UFC Champion. He repeated the performance a number of times, demonstrating the undeniable effectiveness of his family’s style of Jiu-Jitsu.
As a form of self defence, it will enable you to keep safe and overcome much larger opponents if necessary.
As a workout, it is incomparable because you’re having so much fun you don’t realize you’re working out so hard.

These classes will prep you to start your journey. You will work one-on-one or in a small group of fellow novices, learning the basic movements and concepts you’ll need to get the most out of class. If you can’t make it to one of these classes, you can book a private session with one of our instructors – on the house!
These classes are the foundation. Here you will learn complete, solid, fundamental Jiu-Jitsu that works in self defence on the street as well as on the competition mat. From people here on their first day, all the way to black belt, everyone needs to practice the fundamentals. These classes help build a solid understanding and gameplan by drilling the core concepts, strategies and techniques behind Jiu-Jitsu. They are all you need to be a solid BJJ Black Belt.
The advanced student is capable of learning chains of moves and even chains of chains. They also understand subtle nuances between positions and have a fundamental understanding of Jiu-Jitsu. They have demonstrated a certain level of commitment to their training and have achieved the ability to move with balance, grace and precision. Having developed these attributes, the advanced student is ready to learn more intricate, athletic and, simply, advanced Jiu-Jitsu. These classes are for Green Belts (our internal belt, half-way to Blue) and up or by invitation by your instructor.
For the competitor or the hobbyist who want to dive deep into Jiu-Jitsu, these classes offer high-percentage, often aggressive Jiu-Jitsu. You will submit more opponents.

Of course, we chose the name OpenMat because it also speaks to the welcoming atmosphere we want to have, but in the Jiu-Jitsu world, “open mat” which sort of means “free time” – an open training time to develop your Jiu-Jitsu in your own way. You can spar, you can work on a new technique, you can take a private lesson. The three purposes of the open classes are:
It is important that you take charge of your own training and development. Classes are here to expand and refine your technical knowledge and understanding, but ultimately you have to decide what works for you. And as you do, you’ll want to invest extra time and practice in getting the hang of new techniques and perfecting old ones.
A pillar of Brazilian jiu-jitsu, sparring is where you are forced to recall and apply your techniques against various levels of resistance. Sometimes while working on a new technique or chaining a set of techniques, you may want to “positional spar” – spar only within that position. “Light sparring” enables you train at a slower, smoother pace, enabling you to see more opportunities, try new techniques and train without the pressure or intensity of competition-style training. Competition sparring can take many forms, but tends to be more focused and intense. These open mat classes give you the option to train at whatever intensity level is right for your goals.

For those not able to make one of our primer classes, we suggest booking a one-on-one or small group free private lesson to give you a basic introduction to the art. You will learn many of the fundamental movements you’ll be using every day in class, beginner safety tips, the OpenMat Philosophy and some of the basic strategy so you never feel lost. These classes are for our BJJ competition team and those who are thinking about competing, or who just like cutting-edge Jiu-Jitsu. Focused on techniques, strategies and drills to help them win at the highest levels, our athletes train hard with sessions often going on for hours. The time-pressure of competition increases the intensity, focus and fun of the training. This hard training is one of the most invigorating and rewarding things you’ll ever do.

In Jiu-Jitsu competitions, adults compete together until age 30, at which point they have the choice to enter the Masters 1 (<35), 2 (<40), etc, all the way up to Masters’ 5 (<55). Our Masters’ Class is for those 30 years of age and up. OpenMat is for everyone and while we foster an environment in which everyone accommodates the needs of their training partners, it’s still sometimes nice to train and work with people your own age. The vibe and pace of Masters’ Class are calmer, slower and more methodical than a typical competition class, but with the same level of fine technique. As this class is only once/week, it is open to all belt levels.
